Yummy Whampoa Drive Market/Food Centre

Sick of eating around your neighbourhood? Why not make a drive down to Whampoa Drive Market/Food Centre. And if that IS your neighbourhood, then you are one lucky glutton!

Having heard all the ravs about this hawker centre, we made our own trip down to find that famous Ah Hock Oyster Omelette. It took us a bit of luck to find the stall as it has moved from its original temporary market infront of Blk 74 to its final resting place at the newly renovated hawker centre at Blk 90. And disappointed we were not!

Tucked at the middle of the second row of the hawker centre, you choose your indulgence from price of $4, $5 or $6. And this is what a plate of $5 looks like:

The batter is crispy and there are sufficient succulent oysters for 2 persons. Enough said.

The Wanton Mee Stall looked pretty good too, and we decided to give it a try.

This sadly didn’t match up to our expectation. The good thing about the dish was that the noodles were springy but otherwise overwhelmed by the tomato-base gravy. Everything else was just ordinary. It came with 3 wantons btw.

The last test was the rojak we saw on every other patron’s table. We just had to try it.

This is another great master piece. On top of the usual ingredients of turnip, toasted tow kua, bean sprouts, Chinese parsley, it’s got slices of mango and (bingo!) jelly fish. The sauce is of the right consistency and has a slight sourly tinge. Very appetizing. Well done! The only complaint was that the fried dough fritter (You tiao) wasn’t crispy, else it would have been one of the better rojaks ever tasted.
